Polar Sea Ice Mapping Using SeaWinds Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
Microwave remote sensing provides an excellent means for mapping polar sea ice extent. In this study, a new algorithm for polar sea ice mapping is developed for use with the SeaWinds instrument. The approach utilizes a priori information within the framework of Bayes detection to produce sea ice extent maps. Statistical models for sea ice and ocean are represented in histograms which are filtered using a principal component (PC) based filtering technique. Spatial a priori information is incorporated through the loss terms associated with Bayes risk. Sea ice extent maps produced by the algorithm correlate well with the Remund-Long algorithm.

Iterative Estimation of Antarctic Sea Ice Extent Using SeaWinds Data
Polar sea ice extent is an important input to global climate models and is considered to be a sensitive indicator of climate change. An algorithm has previously been developed for sea ice extent detection using data from the NASA scatterometer (NSCAT). This paper discusses the extension of that algorithm to data from SeaWinds on QuikSCAT. Due to differences in the two instruments, several modif...

provide a convenient way to monitor the vast expanses of sea ice in the Polar Regions and this is done primarily using microwave techniques, which contrary to optical instruments, can operate at night and in all-weather conditions. The determination of sea ice extents from satellite platforms can be exploited as a marker for climate change, a navigation tool and a reference for coupled ocean-ic...
متن کاملLand and Ice Applications of SeaWinds Data
While originally designed for wind vector measurements over the ocean, past and present scatterometers have been demonstrated to be effective for large scale monit’oring of the Earth’s land and ice surfaces. SeaWinds is the next generation of Ku-band scatterometers. The wide swath of SeaWinds enables much more frequent coverage of the Earth’s surface than has previously been possible. SeaWinds ...

Designed to retrieve near-surface winds over the ocean, the SeaWinds scatterometer makes 13.4 GHz Ku-band measurements of the normalized radar backscatter of the Earth’s surface. SeaWinds backscatter measurements are being used in a wide variety of studies, including ocean wind retrieval, sea-ice mapping and classification, iceberg tracking, vegetation, soil moisture, and snow accumulation. Two...
